Activity Description

Sterile compounding is an essential component of pharmacy practice for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians and efforts to identify and reduce potential adverse events during the preparation of sterile products is imperative to providing safe, optimal patient care.

Pharmacy technicians are instrumental to the sterile compounding process. In addition to preparing compounded sterile preparations, pharmacy technicians seeking career advancement have also been known to lead efforts for ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, train students and other technicians, optimize workflow, perform environmental and product testing, implement, and maintain sterile compounding technology, and prevent medication errors in the compounding process. Advancing sterile compounding expertise and sharing accountability for job responsibilities is key, as it makes crucial positions more rewarding, and extends everyone's ability to accomplish more for patient safety.

Join the interdisciplinary faculty in this CE program and investigate the essential role that both pharmacists and technicians play when working together in advancing safety in the sterile compounding environments.

Learning Objectives

The intended audience includes: Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians involved in Sterile Compounding, administrators with oversight of Pharmacy Practice, Medication Safety Officers, Quality Improvement and Risk Management professionals, Pharmacy Faculty and Students. Describe the most common error types associated with the preparation of compounded sterile preparations in the pharmacy.
Identify key safety practices for the reduction of risk during sterile compounding.
