Activity Description

In this activity, technicians will learn about the presentation, prevalence, and risk factors for contracting hepatitis C virus (HCV). The workup for HCV requires extensive lab testing to ensure patients receive the most appropriate therapy and for the right length of time. HCV prognosis, goals of therapy, and guideline-recommended treatment options will be discussed. Specialty pharmacies and insurance companies perform drug utilization reviews (DURs) which involve detailed assessments of patient’s lab tests. The technician will be able to anticipate these lab requirements for the successful completion of prior authorizations (PA) and gain awareness on other important workflow considerations.

Learning Objectives

The target audience for this activity includes pharmacy technicians. Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  • Recognize the presentation, prevalence, and risk factors for the hepatitis C virus (HCV).
  • Describe the goals of therapy and prognosis of HCV.
  • Outline the current treatment options for HCV.
  • Explain the important workflow processes to consider when dispensing medications to treat HCV.
