2008 Consensus Conference on the Safety of Intravenous Drug Delivery Systems

Program Description

The highlights and outcomes of the 2008 Consensus Conference on the Safety of IV Drug Delivery Systems has been captured and developed into a multi-media continuing education program. The purpose of this conference was to evaluate the safety of IV infusion systems used for medication administration building on the work from the initial Consensus Conference that convened in 1999. The Second Consensus Conference expanded on the initial conference findings through presentations regarding the impact of medication errors, a review of related standards and guidelines released since 1999, and analyses and perspectives on different IV drug delivery systems.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, pharmacists, nurses and physicians will be able to:

  • Describe the current state of  IV drug delivery in US health systems

  • Discuss analyses and perspectives on the issues surrounding available IV drug delivery systems

  • Describe the current regulatory environment regarding IV drug delivery

  • Outline specific safety considerations that affect the utility of IV drug delivery systems
